Your Rights if Arrested & The Police Station Process

The session will consider the issues such as confidentiality, comments made to officers and how to raise concerns.  It will also look at the legal, ethical, and practical role of the Appropriate Adult at the police station and mistakes that could be made.

 

The session will consider issues such as confidentiality, comments made to officers and how to raise concerns. It will also look at the legal, ethical, and practical role of the Appropriate Adult at the police station and mistakes that could be made.

During this session, you will:

  • Receive an overview of what happens at the police station when someone attends as a volunteer or under arrest, from different perspectives – suspect, police officer and solicitor,
  • Understand what will happen at the police station,
  • Discuss the right to legal representation at the police station,
  • Discuss what to do if arrested,
  • Discuss Section 135 and Section 136 of the Mental Health Act – Police Powers,
  • Understand the role of the Appropriate Adult,
  • Explore issues which may arise being an Appropriate Adult for a suspect, including issues around confidentiality, comments made to the suspect or police officer in and outside the police station, and whether, and how, to raise concerns about the treatment of a suspect.
