Hepatitis C: Enhancing Prevention, Testing and Care

Hepatitis C is a blood bourne virus that affects the liver and is responsible for a huge global public health concern.  Chronic infection can lead to cirrhosis and liver cancer.  Advances in treatment since 2011 led the World Health Organisation to set a target of eliminating Hepatitis C as a global health threat by 2030.

Because infection with Hepatitis C often has no symptoms, a large number of people are unaware that they are infected. Allied to this, Hepatitis C is associated with injecting drug users and the stigma of this prevents people from engaging with testing and treatment.

By the end of this course, you will:

  • Know what Hepatitis C is, how it is spread, and have awareness of the global health impact of the virus
  • Understand the principles of harm reduction and prevention advice to “at risk” populations
  • Understand the longer term impacts on physical health
  • Be able to dispel “myths” about testing, diagnosis and treatment
  • Know and understand treatment pathways, from testing to cure
  • Have input and be able to discuss treatment with someone who has lived experience of Hepatitis C and treatment
  • Become inspired to join the Hepatitis C eradication army!
