These free courses are for people with lived experience of mental health and/or addiction difficulties who are new to the Recovery Academy. You do not have to start your Recovery Academy journey with these courses, but if you are unsure what recovery is, what it means for you, what the Recovery Academy can offer you, and perhaps feel like you have low self-esteem, then these courses may be a good starting point. We have a team of volunteers who can support you to develop your own Individual Learning Plan (ILP) so you can get the most out of your time with us.

These free courses explore people’s experiences of living with certain conditions, disabilities or difficulties. Most importantly, the courses encourage shared learning from people’s lived experience, and professional expertise, so that you can gain a better understanding and learn ways to either support your own recovery journey or support others in theirs.

These free courses explore different approaches used in mental health to support people’s recovery. Each course teaches some basic, practical techniques that are often used in therapy that can be used by anyone. The techniques can be applied by individuals to themselves, or between peers, friends, and family members on a one to one basis or in groups

These free courses explore the link between physical health and mental wellbeing. A large amount of evidence points to the benefit of physical activity in terms of preventing ill health, improving energy and quality of life as well as improving your quality of sleep. Physical wellbeing involves exercising, good nutrition and of course making healthy lifestyle choices and the courses in this section cover these topics

These free courses explore different spiritual techniques that are known to help people in recovery from mental health difficulties, often by helping to reduce anxiety. These courses allow people to connect to faith and nature for example and to be more mindful of themselves and the things around them. They also encourage people to relax and reflect so that people can appreciate the things that matter to them the most.

These free courses encourage you to explore your creative side, whether this is through art or storytelling. These courses are hands-on and teach different creative techniques that can be used to support you.

These free courses aim to give you the information and understanding to make decisions and choices that affect your care and wellbeing. They cover things like our rights to advocacy, how to get the best from relationships and how to manage difficult experiences that might impact our health and wellbeing.

These free courses will be helpful for anyone who wants to get involved with the Recovery Academy or set up their own support group, social enterprise or Community Interest Company. The courses offer lots of knowledge either from personal experiences or professional expertise focussing on facilitation skills, training, quality improvement and innovation.
