An Introduction to Compassion Focussed Therapy

Compassion Focused Therapy focuses on strengthening our intention and ability to skilfully care for ourselves when we are struggling, rather than criticising or neglecting ourselves. Understanding and working with the common fears, blocks, and resistance to this process is a core part of the work.

Understanding and working with the common fears, blocks, and resistance to this process is a core part of the work. Evidence exists that developing our compassionate minds can aid recovery from a wide range problems, contribute to ongoing resilience and build a sense of connectedness and wellbeing.

By the end of this course, you will:

  • Understand how a compassion-focused informed approach to therapy can help to reduce feelings of isolation and shame.
  • Understand that many of our struggles are not our fault, but that we do need to take responsibility for working with them.
  • Understand that while it is important to be able to experience threat emotions (anxiety, fear, disgust and anger), our human minds can become threat dominated, leading us to feel chronically exhausted and fearful.
  • That developing a sense of inner warmth and acceptance can counterbalance our threat focused minds.
  • Become aware that strengthening our compassionate minds can increase our courage, and willingness and ability to cope with our challenges.
  • Understand how strengthening our compassionate mind can enable us to identify and engage in recovery opportunities and develop a sense of well-being.
