NEW – Talking about Trauma & Psychosis

Many people who experience psychosis have also experienced traumatic life events.

Staff and the general public tell us they do not feel confident about talking about traumatic events and worry they might make things worse. They also describe lacking confidence to respond well when sensitive conversations arise. This one‑day training is centered on a recently produced short film by two people with lived experience of psychosis and trauma. It explores what helped and hindered in conversations with the people trying to support them. The workshop aims to provide  practical skills and approaches to make these conversations more helpful.

Trauma‑informed practice is not just about knowledge—it is about how we listen, respond, and build safety. Staff and other supporters need practical, usable skills, and service users need relationships that feel validating, safe, and non‑judgemental. This course provides clear, accessible approaches that fit the busy realities of mental health services and beyond.

By the end of this course, you will:

  • Know how to begin, pace, and talk about adverse events without re‑traumatising people.
  • Gain confidence in using the therapeutic relationship as an intervention in itself.
  • Understand and explain distress as an understandable response to trauma.
  • Understand how to use the co‑produced film and leaflet in practice to help with sensitive conversations
